I am learning so much about receiving right now. It is not the easiest thing! For most of my adult life I have had what I need and more. Sometimes I am on the red line and/or below but I always find my way around. I have always had a hard time receiving things from others. However the Lord has given me a new picture.
If we are a piece of land and the Lord is water. He pours into us, sometimes through the Word, other people, gifts... etc. If we give out and give out without ever receiving what he is pouring into us, we will soon have nothing to give. Many times he uses the people in our lives to pour into our land. We can either choose to not receive it and we will dry up, or take it and create a reservoir or channel.
A reservoir has one inlet and an outlet that is usually shut off. It's role is to keep the water in, to save it. A channel takes the water and pushes it back out to go somewhere else.
These past few months I have received more then ever. Through this time, I am being challenged to give more of myself - through time, money, ability. I do not want to be a reservoir which holds all that I receive but a channel which is able to receive and pour back out to others.
